Add Security To Your Wireless Networks |
Posted: July 14, 2011 |
A lot more people have wi-fi in their homes in order to share the internet, but security seems to be one thing that’s lacking in many areas that utilize this technology. Unless you want everyone in your neighborhood to use your wireless network to get on the internet, here’s a few brief tips to keep your connection and data safe. 1. Password protect your network. This is fairly easy and with many new routers you can add this protection when you first set up your wireless router. Before adding a password set up your security. WPA or WPA2 are the two most widely used security settings on wireless networks for both home and small office users. It’s also the easiest setting for passwords because they can be shared allowing authorized users of your network to connect easily. 2. Password protect your router. While it’s one thing to password protect your wireless connection at home or at your office, it’s quite another to add a user name and password to the router itself. In fact, it should be a requirement especially since many router manufacturers use the same default IP addresses to allow users to gain access to the administrative functions. Adding an administrative name and password for the router can not only prevent unauthorized access to your wireless router, network and internet connection but also helps prevent outside users from changing the router’s settings preventing you from accessing your own network. 3. Never share the network password with anyone that isn’t authorized to connect to the network. Yes, keeping your password safe is an important step in protecting your network. Make sure the password you use is not only kept safe (memorizing it is a good idea) but easy for you to remember. Also adding a number to the network password is also a good idea as well.
